Ray J is truly the gift that keeps on giving.
The world was first introduced to Brandy’s little brother as the foster son on The Sinbad Show before he got his breakthrough role as Dorian on Moesha. Later, he reached massive heights as a recording artist with his hits “Wait A Minute,” “One Wish,” and “Sexy Can I.”
More recently, his career has elevated due to several hilarious and controversial moments. It is often difficult to distinguish whether the 43-year-old is trolling his audience or genuinely believes the things that he says, which is the best part about him. He may be borderline problematic, he may ruffle the feathers of popular celebrities, but he always makes sure to do so in humorous fashion.
One could probably write a full novel on just his memorable quotes and altercations over the years, but VIBE has narrowed it down to seven.
Today on his 43rd birthday (Jan. 17), read along and recall the moments that had us all laughing either with or at the undeniable legend.
The Unbreakable Glasses
In 2019, Ray J sat down with Speedy Morman of Complex for an interview that would get talked about for years to come. Not for his comments on his beef with Fabolous or discussing winning his wife back, but a pair of glasses. Yes, glasses.
Morman commented on how careless the Raydiation artist was with his glasses, and Ray replied “They’re unbreakable.” Speedy was doubtful of that, but Ray J insisted that they were. He was challenged to step on them and turned the challenge back on Morman.
The interview climax came with Speedy Morman breaking them with his hands with ease. Ray J simply looked at him with a blank stare and said “I don’t care.” He probably meant it too, which just makes this exchange even more hilarious. Watch below.
Solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ Community
Sexuality is absolutely nothing to be joked about, especially after decades of struggle for queer communities. It is great seeing those who identify as heterosexual standing in solidarity with those who live otherwise. Ray J stepped up to make a powerful message during Pride Month in 2022 and, in typical fashion, he gave us something to laugh about.
“A lot of ni**as that’s straight, they don’t be trying to the gay community and all my gay ni**as the right way,” he said in an Instagram live video. “So I got to do it because I want to make sure ni**as know that I’m showing nothing but love and I f**k with y’all. We have multiple businesses together. I have a lot of friends.”
He quickly panned the camera to his friend Dean, saying that his initial comments were directed toward him, but then redirected his attention to his viewing audience. “I wanna say that it’s Gay Pride Month, shoutout to all my gay ni**as!”
He had more to say but this portion of his rant is what has circulated the internet over the years, especially when June hits. Check out a short portion of his rant below.

The Breakfast Club Phone Call
Ray and Fabolous had a heated feud in 2011. The Breakfast Club capitalized on their tension by having the “One Wish” singer call in, and boy, did he make it worthwhile.
“Angela Yee, I promise you. Imma have Fab call up there and he’s gonna apologize to The Breakfast Club,” he said. “He’s gonna apologize to me for being a broke a** bi**h a** ni**a.”
He continued his rant, listing off the six Rolls Royces and two Bentley trucks he had parked outside of his house. Charlemagne tried to get Ray J to end the rant peacefully, but there was no peace to be had.
“F**k this ni**a! F**k that whole team! Imma smack the sh*t out that bi**h a** ni**a!” he exclaimed. The Breakfast Club hosts claimed that they were going to try and get Fab on the phone, and reminded Ray J that he couldn’t smack him through the phone.
There were some eyebrow-raising portions of the rant alluding to some very uncomfortable acts being done to Fab that we won’t repeat — and shouldn’t be romanticized — but overall, another classic moment in Ray J’s canon. Check out the phone call below.

— The Blog Era Podcast (@theblogera) June 1, 2023“Danger!”
This particular moment might be people moreso laughing at Ray J than with him.
In 2009, he was the star of his own VH1 reality dating show called For The Love Of Ray J. In Episode 9, he learned some troubling news: one of the contestants, Danger, had sex with one of his friends. Now, this is a tricky situation depending on who you ask; some people don’t care, especially if it happened in the past and not while the two were dating. However, some men can’t get over it regardless and that’s a conversation about the male ego and pride that requires a whole other article.
In any event, Ray learned the news and a look of despair came across his face. It’s unclear whether he was joking or bellowing when he famously said “Danger! She smashed the homie!” Tom Green happened to be with Ray and his crew and decided to flip that phrase into a chant and freestyle about the ordeal. Ray J switched between laughing, holding his hands against his head, and singing along. There was clearly a mix of emotions for him.
The underrated funny parts of this moment are the things he says during the confessional scenes of the show. “You dirty slut,” “Did you at least use protection?” and “Slores will be slores!”
See, this was before the internet had the power to make something go viral instantly, but it was such a significant moment that you could go anywhere and say “Danger! She smashed the homie!” and someone was guaranteed to know the reference. The power of Ray J.

The Hat That Never Sleeps
Ray J‘s reality TV career continued with a stint on Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood. In one infamous scene, he is having a conversation with Safaree about him having sex with other people’s wives. While the conversation is very incendiary, especially with Nicki Minaj’s ex-boyfriend revealing he “accidentally” sent one woman a picture of his private parts, it’s hard to focus because Ray J’s hat changes position every time the camera is on him.
The hat goes from revealing a portion of his hairline and ears to barely hanging off the back of his head, to fully covering his hair and ears to slightly revealing just his ears. Whether this was intentional or the hat just had a mind of its own, it is one of the funniest things one can watch over and over. Check it out above and see if you can count how many different positions his beanie was in.
‘Undefeated, Narrated By Vince Staples’
Okay, so Ray J doesn’t appear physically in this moment but it’s still significant. Vince Staples appeared on Real Late W/ Peter Rosenberg alongside Tyler, The Creator in 2015 and dedicated two minutes to speaking about Ray J’s legend. Tyler prompted it by revealing the rapper has never shared his theory before, and Staples took the baton and ran with it.
“Ray J will never lose, Ray J is the man,” he began. “Ray J is probably top five Hip-Hop west coast of all-time.” Rosenberg asked why Staples felt that way, and he had a quick response. “Does Ray J not have hits?” he asked, and the Hot 97 host said he had “a couple.” Staples continued, saying “Ray J was the first blood on record that was certified. You seen the Kay Slay interview? So without Ray J, there is no [The Game.]”
Peter Rosenberg still seemed hesitant to agree, and Vince had more to say. “You like Kanye West’s music, don’t you? You like Moesha, don’t you? You like VH1, don’t you? Ray J has had a hand in everything that is current Black culture.” Vince has plenty more to say in a clip that still circulates the internet to this day. Sometimes you need someone else to create a moment for you, and Ray J had that in Vince Staples.

Introducing… The Kardashians
What else is there to say about this moment that hasn’t already been said? The infamous 2007 sex tape between Ray J and Kim Kardashian introduced her to the world and the rest was history. Kim K’s time in the limelight has been far from spotless, even after such a damning breakthrough moment, which may have been foreshadowing in hindsight.
Lately, there have been conversations about whose idea it was to record them having sex and whether the tape was purposely put out as a publicity stunt, especially since the Kardashian family got their reality show several months later. Whatever the case may be, Ray J was an active participant in the film and the Kardashian family will forever be tied to him.
